Michael Jackson - Thriller (Official Video)

I remember Dominique telling me Michael saved the day because he came up with the house having a laundry chute, which I assume facilitated the chase.

I never actually saw the film. Do you remember any aspects of this screenplay? What was your role during this meeting?

What input did you have in the changes that Dominique was suggesting? RH: So, I had a dilemma. So, I put together a pitch that, as I remember it, started precisely where Halloween 4 had ended, which, as I am remembering it right now, had the Michael Myers character at the bottom of a collapsed mine shaft or some similar place and dead.

And I imagined him there and remembered the classic scene in the original Frankenstein movie in which the creature is brought to life in Dr.

And bringing him back to life. From there the Frankenstein story took over my imagination. If not, you should. The details of the pitch are long forgotten, except for one key element, which was that the revived Michael Myers would no longer be the embodiment of pure evil.

Instead, the harm caused by him — and I should say the significant harm that he would cause throughout the movie — was to be incidental.

In response to attacks upon him. The result of his own need to survive in a world that was out to destroy him because it believed him to be the embodiment of evil he once was.

In this scenario, Michael Myers was to have only one friend. The person who knows him better than anyone else, who knows to his horror the evil of Michael Myers past.

I mean Loomis, the Donald Pleasence character. Think of the scene in Frankenstein when the creature meets the child by the pool of water.

The movie then becomes about Loomis trying to save Michael Myers from the mob as he gets closer and closer to reaching Michael as a human being.

The second draft of the screenplay written by Dominique and Michael Jacobs featured Myers escaping from the Halloween 4 mine shaft, and stumbling upon a shack on the outskirts of town, which housed an odd young man interested in the black arts.

It works, of course, and Myers proceeds to kill his savior. Or was this solely your idea that Dominique took a liking to?

Your description of the young man and his demonic arts ritual strikes me as pure Dominique who had a penchant for the supernatural and had already explored supernatural themes in some of his earlier films was it Night Angel?

Frankenstein — present. In other words, my idea was that the monster is reanimated purely through the power of nature — nothing supernatural.

It is logical and most likely that Dominique had the supernatural opening already in mind and he may very well have told me about it before the meeting and that I tweaked it to suit my sensibilities for the pitch.

See, my basic idea turned the whole horror movie concept on its head. Michael Myers was not the monster in my version.

The monsters in the movie were to be the townspeople, the authorities, who, spurred by pure irrationality — fear, primarily, based on a lot of false assumptions — were out to destroy something they thought was evil, but, as Loomis grew to understand may not be evil at all in my proposed incarnation.

Traditionally, Michael Myers was certainly pure evil and who may even have the potential for great good.

That theme resonated for me. The trick for me, had I ever written the thing, would have been to include the young girl in the mounting danger Michael faced, as her sympathy and commitment to his safety grew since she, because of her innocence, would conceivably come to see in Michael the goodness that Loomis comes to see in him.

But none of this was ever taken seriously. I think they offered me the job because they liked my imagination even though the specifics I came up with were summarily rejected.

But Halloween 5 was just not such a case. All credit goes to Dominique and Michael Jacobs and probably Shem Bitterman and the production team, including the actors.

They were the creative forces behind Halloween 5. You must be logged in to post a comment. Username or Email Address. Don't have an account?

Two hours later, my agent, who thought I went too far, received a call from Mr. The next day, I went in with Michael Jacobs. Here, Harders shares his perspective of the genre, his meeting with Othenin-Girard, and details how he envisioned the revenge of Michael Myers.

Robert Harders: Dominique and I met through our mutual agent. Our meeting was set up because he was a director looking for a script and I was a writer with a script.

I liked Dominique right away and we have remained friends. RH: I thought the original Halloween movie was impressive story telling and on a par with Night of the Living Dead and some of the films I remembered from growing up like Invaders from Mars and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

The stories mentioned above are, in my opinion, actually quite sophisticated in that they operated on multiple levels — employing horror and suspense to entertain the genre aspect but entertaining in order to draw the audience into participating in a deeper, perhaps even unspoken, social, political, or moral conflict — and that it was this sophistication that made the films great.

Once the franchise potential was realized for movies like Halloween then it became a matter of turning out sausage. In other words, a formulaic and gratuitous chase.

Get the girl or group of teenagers isolated and bring on the monsters kind of stuff. Which was not at all anything I ever wanted to be involved with.

How did this initial meeting go for you and Dominique? In other words, I had absolutely no illusions that the powers that be would jeopardize the franchise with so drastic a departure from what was expected by audiences around the world.

To my horror, again, this second project was a horror story called The Dollhouse. We got a script written but it was never made.

That one was a terrible experience because of the producers involved. Do you recall why you were not involved with the film past the meeting?

Did you ever discuss the project with Dominique while the film was in-production? RH: Turns out they offered me the job of rewriting the original script anyway, but I turned it down, so my involvement with the project ended with that meeting.

I was too excited about the ideas I had come up with and knew myself well enough to know I would hate doing what I felt they wanted.

Fortunately, Michael Jacobs was available and he worked on the script. I remember Dominique telling me Michael saved the day because he came up with the house having a laundry chute, which I assume facilitated the chase.

I never actually saw the film. Do you remember any aspects of this screenplay? What was your role during this meeting?

Written by simon. If there is one thing that can be counted upon in Hollywood, it is the sequel. As long as the film either makes a profit, however small, or is enough of a tax write-off to keep the producers afloat, the sequels will keep on a-coming.

In some cases, such as X-Men 2 or Aliens, this is a good thing. However, they are a small minority that prove the rule, regardless of their excellence in themselves.

Horror franchises are the worst offenders in this regard. It's not so surprising when you consider that horror is a difficult genre to make work, and that no writer wants to be associated with a horror film that fell flat what's the writer of Halloween III up to lately?

But, as recent films like Ringu or its American equivalent have shown, Hollywood can get significantly more original with its horror than it has tried for most of the last twenty years.

The original Halloween, much like the original A Nightmare On Elm Street or the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, was a novel concept that brought something new to the genre.

In the case of Halloween, that something new was a silent killer who at times seemed more sane than his doctor. Of course, it also helped blow the number of murders committed by the mentally ill way out of proportion in the mind of the public, but it also exploits the fact that the extremely mentally ill are much more creative Ed Gein, for example.

The Halloween "franchise" should never have made it past the second episode. Where the first episode spent time creating an atmosphere and set up characters one cared about, the second episode could be summed up with "hey, bimbo, try power-walking, he'll never catch you that way".

The worst part is that every episode since could be summed up in exactly the same manner. The fifth film made an abortive attempt to restore this tension, but failed.

Fast forward to film number eight, and the best idea that the writers can come up with is sticking a mob of dopey twenty-somethings into the Myers house as part of a reality TV show.

Not only is this a creative vacuum, it also opens up a million plot holes. For one thing, if the street that the Myers house is located on is still part of a residental zone, one has to wonder why the house hasn't simply been torn down and either had another house built on it, or been replaced by a small park.

Another big plot problem is the stupidity of the cast. A murderer taking so long to dispose of a body, dragging a video camera all the while, is just begging to be caught.

There's also a big problem with cinematography. One would have thought that if the idea of resolutions lower than 35mm film in theatres hadn't been firmly killed by cinematic turds like Blair Christian Project, it certainly has been buried by the likes of Baise-Moi or Attack Of The Clones.

A signifcant portion of the film is seen through the eyes of web cameras, however, and the abrupt transitions between the formats do not make for a pleasant viewing experience.

This is to say nothing of the fact that in spite of trying to make the film more "now" did I mention the poorly-research pop-psychology subtexts?

Not exactly what I would call even slightly creative. Compare this with Ringu's ending, and it is easy to see why American horror films are so derided, even in their country of origin.

I am not surprised in the slightest that the rating for this film is 4. As I sit and watch it now, I don't think of how creative or interesting the story is, as I did with parts one and three.

I think to myself something along the lines of "Can't the Akkads do something creative for a change? I think that, in essence, summarises every frame of the film.

Photo Gallery. Whereas, following up that film with a viewing of this direct sequel, I was pleasantly surprised to discover this film was much, MUCH better than I remembered.

At times, the direction and cinematography capture a certain aura of everyday evil, a suburban gothic, the afternoon-sun-washed dread of knowing the facade of modern commercial civilization will NOT protect you from the law of the jungle when a wolf, especially one as merciless and so skilled at his craft as one Michael Myers, descends from the hills As for characterization, this was the last great performance of Donald Pleasance as Dr.

Loomis, far more captivating than his final turn as the character in the next sequel, "Halloween 6 : The Curse Of Michael Myers".

Along with delivering more iconic lines about Michael's pure evil nature, he's at his most unhinged at times, he's had ENOUGH at this point, even going so far, in a few borderline disturbing scenes, as terrorizing the character of then child actor Danielle Harris, returning from Halloween 4 as "Jamie Lloyd", whom yet again shows herself to be a great talent, even at this early age, and her character having developed an interesting "psychic-link" of sorts with her uncle, Michael.

Most every other featured character serves their role well, with some bringing real emotional substance to the plot, with their relationship to Jamie.

The film isn't a flawless entry of course, I don't particularly care for some creative choices, such as the sanitized decision to largely cut away from Michael's carnage as he wraps his jaws around his prey, so to speak.

Perhaps most glaringly, while Halloween 4 wasn't nearly as good as I remembered, it still had one of the best endings of the series; this film, however, despite being far better than I recall, still has one of the weaker conclusions to any Halloween film; a "cliffhanger" ending, foreshadowed by a minor, out of place subplot, to set up a sequel that would not arrive until 6 years later and mostly not deliver on the premise, though the "Producer's Cut" of Halloween 6 is unquestionably superior to what was released in cinemas.

Regardless of it's relatively minor flaws, it's still a more interesting, rewatchable, SUPERIOR film in practically every facet over the recent, highly overrated "Halloween ".

Always a good and not gory film. The music is what gets you. Good addition. Better than 6 and 7. Yea, they should not have gone two movies with the little girl.
